About Essex Fells
Formerly part of the Township of Caldwell, the
Borough of Essex Fells is almost entirely
residential and is a beautiful hamlet nestled
between Verona, Roseland, West Orange and The
Caldwell's. It was called Essex Fells both for the
county in which it was planned and because a man
named John Fell was one of its founders. The word
fell also suggested a rolling hilly area which suits
the borough perfectly. With its graceful winding
streets, local skating pond and thousands of tall
trees, it has a Norman Rockwell sensibility. And,
with its many large historic homes on lots several
acres in size, it is also among the wealthiest
residential communities in the United States. In
2008, New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked it the 10th
best place to live in the state.
What's in Essex Fells
As the smallest community in Essex County, Essex
Fells Borough has fewer than 800 homes, over 2,000
residents and covers a 1.5 square mile radius. Its
residents are very active in supporting the
community. It has a volunteer Fire department, the
Essex Fells Garden Club, The Dogwood Festival, and
foundations to support the education, police and
recreation departments.
Parks and Recreation
Along Essex Fell's Caldwell border is Grover
Cleveland Park, a heavily wooded 42 acre park with
open space for recreational activities. Trotter
Tract is the largest park in the area (106 acres),
with three soccer fields, a lacrosse field and
basketball court. Skating pond is charming and very
popular. Some of the New Jersey Devils have been
known to skate here in their off time. On the
northeastern border of Essex Fells, behind the
grammar school, is a natural habitat called The
Glen. And The Essex Fells Country Club is a private
and prestigious club with a golf course, tennis
courts, pool, and beautiful clubhouse.
Commuting from Essex Fells
Many residents of Essex Fells commute to
Manhattan. Some take the bus to New York Port
Authority via Route 280 or Route 3, while others
drive a short distance out Rte 280 to Harrison where
they park and ride the train to New York's Penn
Station.
Essex Fells Schools
The Essex Fells School District is very highly
ranked and well supported. The elementary school
serves kindergarten through sixth grade and has a
smaller student/teacher ratio than surrounding
communities. As students reach middle and high
school, they become part of the West Essex Regional
School District, attending West Essex Junior High
School and West Essex High School.
