The Forest Avenue School is a true "Community of Learners." Students are afforded many opportunities to build warm and lasting relationships with teachers and other adults as they engage in a wide variety of educational experiences. Parents are our constant partners, at school and at home, helping students, classrooms, the media center, and the cafeteria. Others work tirelessly behind the scenes to publish a weekly bulletin, raise funds to provide curriculum enhancements, and build a strong, supportive parent base. Our small faculty constantly strives to keep abreast of new trends and techniques in education. Teachers model a culture of collaboration that enriches our Community of Learners.

We strive to achieve success for every student through a model of differentiated instruction that matches students' learning styles with curriculum expectations. Our school has won Star School status and two Best Practice awards for our Mandarin and technology programs.

“At the Brookdale Avenue School we believe that every child has the ability to learn and the right to an education. Students are provided opportunities to acquire the life-long skills that will serve them today and in the future, not only as individuals but also as members of their community. To help achieve these goals, teachers create a nurturing atmosphere that recognizes the unique individual abilities of each student.

Family support is critical in developing a sound, well-rounded educational experience for Brookdale students. The integration of the family and the school communities fosters the intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and cultural development of our students.

Our common goal is to develop an appreciation of one's self, an appreciation of others, a solid foundation of essential skills, and a love of learning that encourages life-long growth.

Laning Avenue School

The Laning Avenue School exemplifies its motto "Learning is Fun!" Several special programs have been initiated to exemplify “Learning is Fun.” School-wide celebrations to commemorate holidays, reading, and learning are frequently held. Cross-grade level buddies engage in reading and writing activities that build positive partnerships between younger and older students. Third and fourth grade students participate in the “Battle of the Books” competition to enrich their Language Arts program. Students work cooperatively and gain insight to valuable “team work” strategies as participants in this program.

The staff at Laning Avenue School sets the standard for and exemplifies the theme “Learning is Fun.” Teachers have taken responsibility for charting the course of district and individual professional development. The staff has worked diligently to better themselves as well as impact their 100-hour responsibilities. Combined with a wealth of graduate and in-service courses these teachers are life long learners, modeling what we want to instill in our children.

H. B. Whitehorne Middle School
600 Bloomfield Avenue
Verona, New Jersey 07044
(973) 239-1300

The purpose of the middle school program is to help children develop their creative, intellectual, and physical potential, their sense of responsibility, their self-esteem, and their respect for others. The instructional program emphasizes the mastery of basic language and mathematics skills, the development of critical thinking skills and problem solving strategies. The program also provides children with opportunities to study new subjects and explore new interests. The co-curricular program offers children an opportunity to explore leisure time and career interests. They participate in a wide range of activities and learn the importance of cooperating and competing with others.
The middle school program is an integration of three important goals: (1) to learn factual information; (2) to acquire academic skills; and (3) to develop socially, emotionally and physically.

H. B. Whitehorne Middle School meets the needs of students who are approaching intellectual, social, emotional and physical changes at a rate more rapid than any other time of their lives.

During these middle school years students need academic challenges and social experiences in an environment that is consistent and stable. To accomplish this goal, students work closely with teachers, counselors, and administrators during their four years at the school. Schedules are carefully organized to meet the academic needs of the child.
